Scriptural Text (The Apostles' Creed)

"I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended to heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead."

Intro

What do I believe in as I live my life? That decides how you live and how you die. It supports you in times of hardship; it is truly the foundation of life. A life without a foundation is pitiable.

From very early on, the Church summarized the things they believed into short sentences. These were confessed at times such as baptism. This is what is called the Apostles' Creed, a confession of faith that is still read in churches all over the world today. It is the very basis.

Today’s portion might be a place that especially needs explanation. But it is an important part. For example, Jesus died, was buried, and "descended to hell (Hades)." What does this mean?

Recently, I asked someone who has been a Christian for a long time, "Do you know what 'Hades' is?" They said, "A dark place," so I replied, "Isn't that just 'darkness' (yami) instead of 'Hades' (yomi)?" Another person said, "Some kind of hole further down," which is quite vague. Another said, "Hades is hell, right? Does that mean Jesus went to hell?" It requires a bit of explanation.

Also, it says Jesus is "seated at the right hand of God." Why the right? Someone said, "Because God is right-handed?" Hmm.

Furthermore, it says Jesus will come again. Today, I want to learn about these things and confirm the foundation of Christian faith. And please do not forget: the Apostles' Creed has continued to be a confession of hope for Christians, and it remains so for us today. It is a hope deeply involved in my life.  Shall we stand? Let us confess together.

1. The Victorious Christ

• I believe in the Lord Jesus

First, a review of last time. Did Jesus become God because he was a great person? No. God became human—the God who created everything in this universe.

To give you an idea of how many stars are in this universe, it is currently said there are about 70 sextillion (700 gai). There are that many stars shining like the sun in this universe. It is also said to be "more than the number of all the grains of sand on Earth." The God who created all of them became human to help us.

In July 1991, when Mount Unzen-Fugen in Nagasaki Prefecture erupted and many people lived in evacuation shelters, something became a topic of conversation. The Heisei Emperor and Empress visited the shelter and knelt on the floor; that became a topic. He is a great person. This became news and the whole of Japan came to know it. However, it is a sad thing that many Japanese people do not know the world-changing great news: that not a human, but the true God visited us, and not only visited us but became one of us and lived with us, and then died on the cross as a substitute for our sins.

Now, Jesus was hung on the cross.  What did it say in the creed? "Crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell (Hades)."

• Descended to Hell (Hades)

Let me provide a little commentary here. What on earth is "descended to Hades"? The word translated as "Hades" (yomi) was originally "Hades" in Greek. This is the place where souls are kept before the final judgment. When we look at the Bible, people who believe in Jesus go straight to heaven when they die. To the criminal hung on the cross next to Him, Jesus said, "Today you will be with me in paradise."

People who accept Jesus are saved. But those who do not go to this Hades. It is what we call hell, but caution is needed. There is a word we want to distinguish from Hades, which is "Gehenna." Gehenna is different from Hades. If Hades is a temporary hell before the final judgment, Gehenna is the final point of eternal destruction that arrives after the final judgment. It is depicted as a lake of burning fire.

Now, the place Jesus went was the temporary hell, Hades. First, I want you to understand this. And another thing I want you to understand is: what did Jesus go there to do?

Actually, a while after I became a Christian, I became a little worried. If Jesus went to Hades, there seem to be demons imprisoned there, and I wondered if the bad people who went to hell might gang up on Him and be mean. "You jerk! Because of you, we are here..." But there is no need to worry.

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. 

1 Peter 3:19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison. 

1 Peter 3:20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 

These "spirits" do not seem to refer to dead people, but to demons who did reckless things in the days of Genesis. Some fallen angels went so far as to mingle with human women. It was something outrageous. In Jewish tradition, it was believed that these rebellious angels were imprisoned until the final judgment. Therefore, the words of this letter of Peter likely take such things into account. And this word "proclaim" (proclaimed) is kerysso in Greek. Kerysso is a word for publicly announcing the orders or victory of a king or general. Christ, who died on the cross but was made alive in the spirit, went to the place of the rebellious spirits and made a declaration of complete victory.

I'm glad Jesus wasn't being bullied by demons. Jesus, who declared victory, rose again.

And how does the Apostles' Creed continue? "He rose again... he ascended to heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty." Let's think about this.

2. He is in Heaven

Jesus, who ascended to heaven—it is quite different from us going to heaven. Jesus returned to the place where He was originally. And He is "seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty." Why the right? It probably doesn't mean God is right-handed. In the Bible, the word "right" is not just a direction; it is a position symbolizing God’s absolute authority, honor, and effective power. In the Bible, God's right hand represents the "power that brings victory" itself.

Also, in the ancient Near Eastern world, sitting on the right side of a king meant having authority equal to that king and exercising all governing power on the king's behalf. The resurrected Jesus said: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." That's amazing, isn't it? It is in the name of this Person that we pray today as well.

Now, from here is what is important. What is Jesus, who is in heaven, doing now?

Romans 8:33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.

Romans 8:34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

We commit sins. We make mistakes. At such times, haven't you thought: "Ah, I'm really no good. I can't call myself a Christian like this. God must be angry with me"? But Jesus is interceding for us. "Please forgive them. For the sake of my blood." Also, the Bible says the devil, Satan, is the accuser. The one who accuses us before God day and night. "What part of you is a Christian? There's no way you'll be blessed. No way your family will be saved. No way your prayer will be heard." But Jesus is defending us.

Here again, being seated at the right hand of God is important. In a trial, the right side was also the place where the defense attorney stood. While Satan (the accuser) blames us, Christ, who is at the right hand of God, is always defending us, saying, "By my blood, this person has been made righteous." You do not have to desperately insist on your own righteousness by yourself. Jesus is interceding for you.

I met a man at a church I visited before. He said he came to faith after becoming an adult. His wife was the first to have faith, and his young son started going to church with her. But he himself wasn't interested at all. Then, at one point, it was discovered that his son, who was 3 years old at the time, had childhood cancer. After a life of fighting the illness until the first grade of elementary school, he passed away. It was so, so sad.

The funeral was held at the church the son had attended. A small coffin. But there, he found hope. My son is in heaven now. He is with Jesus. I will also go there eventually. I can meet him again there.

He came to faith and has been walking in it. He is probably about 70 years old now. As a church officer, he supports the church admirably. Believing that the day will come, he walks forward positively with hope. If it weren't for believing in God, such a thing would have been impossible.

3. The Christ Who Comes Again

  The Second Coming "From there he will come to judge the living and the dead."

  
  

Christ will return again. This is called the Second Coming (sai-rin). Did you know that the Bible actually prophesies more about the Second Coming than about the First Coming, which was Christ's birth?

Why is the Second Coming important? Because it is the goal. The story of the Bible starts from the perfect world God created. However, it was broken when human beings, tempted by the devil, committed sin. The relationship between God and man was broken. Also, the world became distorted due to the influence of sin. And the Bible is the story of God's salvation trying to restore that broken relationship. The highlight is Jesus' cross, but what is the goal? After this gospel is witnessed to all nations, Jesus will return again and make everything new. God's salvation will be completely accomplished.

The people of the early church longed for this Second Coming. There was persecution beyond our imagination, and their companions were being killed. Evil was rampant. The strong trampled on the weak. In the midst of that, they prayed, "Jesus, please come."

Because that day is the day all tears are wiped away, the day all evil is destroyed, the day all conflicts disappear.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him. 

According to a survey by the Hakuhodo Institute of Life and Living, to the question "In what direction do you think Japan is heading today?", the percentage of people who answered "heading in a good direction" had almost no change from last time, being 5.9% in 2024. Not even 6% of people can think we are heading in a good direction. But what about Christians?

A pastor was asked this during COVID: "Why can you remain so optimistic?" "Because I know the world is heading toward a happy ending."

Do you know that today? Looking at the news, you might feel anxious about what will happen to the world. But God holds everything. The world is heading toward completion. And let's not forget that there are things we must do until that time.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 

The world is heading toward the goal. But it's not the goal yet. There are things the church built in each land should do. There are things we should do now. There are things this church should do. We walk while fixing our eyes on hope.

A parte de hoje pode ser uma que precise de uma explicação especial. Mas é uma parte importante. Por exemplo, Jesus morreu, foi sepultado e desceu à mansão dos mortos (Hades). O que isso significa?

Recentemente, perguntei a uma pessoa que é cristã há muito tempo: "Você sabe o que é a mansão dos mortos (Hades)?". Ela respondeu: "É um lugar escuro". Em julho de 1991, quando o Monte Unzen-Fugen, na província de Nagasaki, entrou em erupção, muitas pessoas viveram em abrigos, e algo se tornou assunto. O Imperador Heisei e sua esposa visitaram o abrigo e se ajoelharam no chão; isso foi muito comentado. Ele é uma pessoa admirável. Isso se tornou notícia e todo o Japão ficou sabendo, mas é triste que muitos japoneses não conheçam a grande notícia que mudou o mundo: não um homem, mas o verdadeiro Deus nos visitou, e não apenas nos visitou, mas se tornou um de nós, viveu conosco e morreu na cruz como nosso substituto pelos nossos pecados.

Jesus disse ao ladrão crucificado ao seu lado: "Hoje mesmo estarás comigo no paraíso."

Quem aceita Jesus é salvo. Mas quem não o aceita, vai para este Hades. É o chamado inferno, mas é preciso ter cuidado. Uma palavra que queremos distinguir de Hades é Gehenna. Gehenna é diferente de Hades. Se o Hades é um inferno temporário antes do julgamento final, o Gehenna é o destino final da perdição eterna que vem após o julgamento final. É descrito como um lago de fogo ardente.

2. Está no Céu

• Intercessão

Romanos 8:33 "Quem fará alguma acusação contra os escolhidos de Deus? É Deus quem os justifica."

Romanos 8:34 "Quem os condenará? Foi Cristo Jesus que morreu; e mais, que ressuscitou e está à direita de Deus, e também intercede por nós."

Nós pecamos. Cometemos falhas. Nessas horas, você já pensou: "Ah, eu não presto mesmo. Não posso me chamar de cristão assim. Deus deve estar zangado comigo"? Mas Jesus está intercedendo por nós. "Por favor, perdoe-o. Por consideração ao meu sangue". Além disso, a Bíblia diz que o diabo, Satanás, é o acusador. Aquele que nos acusa diante de Deus dia e noite. "Onde você é cristão? 3. O Cristo que Virá Novamente

• A Segunda Vinda

No entanto, ele foi quebrado quando o homem, tentado pelo diabo, pecou. A relação entre Deus e o homem foi quebrada. Além disso, devido ao efeito do pecado, este mundo também se tornou distorcido. E não esqueçamos que temos algo a fazer até esse momento.

2 Pedro 3:9 "O Senhor não retarda a sua promessa, ainda que alguns a têm por tardia; mas é longânime para convosco, não querendo que alguns se percam, senão que todos venham a arrepender-se."

O mundo está caminhando para o objetivo. Mas ainda não é o final. Existe algo a ser feito pela igreja estabelecida em cada lugar. Existe algo que devemos fazer agora. Existe algo que esta igreja deve fazer. Caminhamos olhando para a esperança.
