"Learning from the First Failure"
Genesis 3:1–5(Week 1)
Introduction — Mitochondrial DNA
There was a documentary on NHK some time ago that I haven't been able to forget. Inside our genes, there is something called mitochondrial DNA. Unlike most DNA, this particular type is not passed down from the father — it is transmitted only from mother to child, generation after generation.
When scientists traced this mitochondrial DNA back through history, they discovered something remarkable. Follow the maternal line of every human being on earth far enough back, and you arrive at a single woman who lived in Africa long ago.
Scientists named her "Mitochondrial Eve" — a name taken directly from Eve in the Bible. Rather than science undermining the Bible, it seems to be catching up to it.
Now consider this: in the same way, every problem faced by every person living on this earth — illness, conflict, arguments between husbands and wives, lying, hurting one another, earthquakes, war, death — all of it, when traced back to its origin, leads to a single event.
Genesis chapter 3.
Looking at Genesis chapters 1 and 2, the world is perfect. God made the world, and made humanity. Adam and Eve. A wonderful world. A world without sin. If you only want to see that perfect world, I recommend sticking with chapters 1 and 2. But chapter 3 changes everything. Sin entered the world, and everything was distorted. The root of whatever you are struggling with today is here.
We will study Genesis chapter 3 over two weeks. Today, we focus especially on the subject of temptation.
Scripture Reading: Genesis 3:1–5
Point 1 — The Nature of the Devil
◆ What the Devil Looks Like
The serpent in this passage refers to the devil — Satan. If it were just an ordinary snake, you'd expect a very different reaction: "Adam! The snake is talking!"
Let me explain what Satan actually is. Satan is opposed to God — but he cannot defeat God directly. So instead, he attacks what God values most: human beings. His aim is to corrupt people and drag them away from God.
Verse 1 tells us the serpent "was more crafty than any of the wild animals." The Hebrew word used here — arum — carries meanings like "cunning," "shrewd," and "calculating." So it is hard to imagine Satan appearing in an obviously threatening or sinister way. He most likely came across as perfectly pleasant.
We often picture the devil with horns and a pitchfork, drooling and foolish — like a villain from a cartoon. But that image is wrong.
There was a film years ago starring Keanu Reeves called The Devil's Advocate. The word diabolos in Greek means devil. Al Pacino played Satan in that film, and it was deeply unsettling — not because he looked like a cartoon villain, but because he looked like the opposite. He was an elegantly dressed gentleman, posing as a brilliant New York lawyer. He appeared to be someone who could give the main character everything he ever wanted. The main character was drawn in — and his life was destroyed through temptation.
I think that portrayal is far closer to the truth.
C.S. Lewis, in the preface to his famous book The Screwtape Letters, makes this very point: stop imagining the devil the way artists have depicted him. The reason the devil is drawn with bat wings is not because that reflects reality — it is simply because humans prefer birds over bats. Lewis goes further, suggesting that if modern people have been led to picture the devil as a ridiculous figure in tights, that is exactly what the devil wants.
And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.— 2 Corinthians 11:14
◆ He Knows Your Weak Points
Because the devil is intelligent, he knows precisely where you are vulnerable — and when you are most vulnerable. He studies his targets. He learns them. He watches for the right moment.
Do you find yourself falling into the same failures again and again? Always facing the same temptation? That is not a coincidence. The devil knows your weak points. He knows exactly what to press, and when, to keep you from drawing close to God.
And he comes to you in an appealing form — looking like he is on your side.
Satan said to Eve: "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
He approached her like a concerned friend. "Wait — not from any tree? That seems harsh, doesn't it? Is that really true?"
The devil's trap always begins by making you doubt God's love.
Point 2 — The Substitution Strategy
◆ "Guidance Toward Life" → "Rules That Restrict Me"
Eve answered: "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'"
The devil replied: "You will not certainly die. In fact, God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
Two things to note about sin: it doesn't kill you immediately — but it leads toward death. And it appears as though it will satisfy you — as though it will meet your deepest needs.
Notice what the devil is doing here. He is not changing God's words — those cannot be changed. What he is changing is how Eve sees them. He is taking guidance that leads toward life, and making it feel like a restriction that holds her back.
"That rule is holding you back." What was meant to protect and give life is reframed as a cage.
This strategy is working just as effectively today as it did then.
We so quickly turn God's words of grace — His loving guidance — into rules, regulations, and restrictions.
"Because I'm a Christian, I have to pray. I have to read the Bible. I have to go to church." But wait — those things are not restrictions. They are what protect us. "I have to give offerings." But giving is God's invitation to blessing.
Or consider: "I have to stay faithful to my spouse. I'm not supposed to have sex outside of marriage. Why? That's so unfair. Everyone else is doing it. And I'm not even supposed to look at someone with lust?"
And the devil whispers: "Seriously? That's so restrictive. Everyone does it. It'll be fine. God doesn't understand you. He's just piling rules on you. He's limiting your life."
◆ Restriction or Protection?
Let's think about this carefully. Are God's words really restrictions?
Imagine a fish saying: "I'm sick of being confined to water. I want to be free." It leaps out onto the land. What happens? It dies. The water isn't restricting the fish — the water is what keeps the fish alive. The water is its protection.
Does your child love being in a car seat? Does your child love wearing a seatbelt? In our house, it was a battle. Screaming, crying, "Hold me!" But is a parent restricting their child by putting them in a car seat? No. They are protecting them. The child simply cannot understand that yet.
In the same way, might we sometimes mistake God's protection for restriction? God is trying to protect you.
There is a widespread misunderstanding in society that freedom means the absence of rules. But what would happen if all rules disappeared — if police and government ceased to function? You would have nothing to protect you. No rules means no protection.
To abandon God's word is to abandon your protection.
The message repeated throughout Scripture: "Keep my words, and you will flourish."
The devil's attack is not to change God's words — it is to change how we see them. To make us doubt God's love. To make us experience His loving guidance as restriction. And then to make us throw it away.
Point 3 — Learning from Eve's Failure
◆ God's Word vs. The World's Word
What had God said? He said that eating the fruit would bring death.
"You will not certainly die." Of course that was a lie. Lying is the devil's native language.
Eve's mistake is laid bare right here: she trusted the serpent's word over God's word.
I wonder whether many Christians today are being deceived in the same way. The devil is constantly working to make us trust the world's words over God's words. And when people trusted the devil's voice over God's voice, humanity fell.
Sin entered the world. Death and disease entered the world. Humanity lost its connection to God. This is the origin of human sin.
◆ The Rematch
But this story between the serpent and the woman is not finished. There is a rematch — and Jesus stepped in to fight it.
After forty days of fasting, Jesus was tempted by the devil. The devil's proposals were deeply appealing and seemed entirely reasonable. So how did Jesus respond?
Where Eve had abandoned God's word, Jesus met every temptation with God's word.
"It is written…"
This is the right way. Many people try to fight temptation with their own experience, their own thinking, their own feelings. But I want to encourage you to declare God's word instead.
"God says this." "It is written in Scripture."
When you lose confidence in yourself → "You are precious and honored in my sight."When you are anxious about the future → "I am with you."
◆ God Did Not Give Up
Humanity once refused to believe God's word. Humanity threw it away. But God gave humanity another chance.
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."
Jesus did not only overcome the devil's temptation. He cancelled out all the consequences of sin that began back in Genesis.
In Genesis chapter 3, humanity fell. But God did not abandon humanity. In fact, almost immediately after the fall, God began to speak of His plan of rescue:
"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."— Genesis 3:15
"Her offspring" — the singular form is used here. One person is being indicated. Satan would wound him — but he would crush Satan's head completely. A total victory.
That "offspring of the woman" is Jesus Christ.

Humanity failed. But God prepared a plan of salvation. For anyone who believes in Him.
We choose to live trusting in God's word. We will not throw it away — because we know that God's word leads us toward life.

想象一條魚說：「我受夠了在水裡被限制！我要自由！」然後它跳出水面，跳上了岸。結果呢？它死了。水不是在限制這條魚，水是在讓這條魚活著，保護牠。
你的孩子喜歡坐兒童安全座椅嗎？喜歡繫安全帶嗎？我們家為這個沒少費力。孩子哭鬧，大叫，「抱抱！」父母把孩子放在安全座椅上，是在限制孩子嗎？不是，是在保護孩子。只不過孩子還太小，不能理解這一點。
同樣地，我們是否有時候把神給我們的保護誤認為是限制？神是在嘗試保護你。
社會上有一種誤解，認為沒有規則才是自由。但如果所有規則都消失、警察和政府都停止運作，會發生什麼？沒有任何東西可以保護你。沒有規則，就是沒有保護。
丟棄神的話語，就是丟棄保護。
聖經中反覆傳遞的信息是：「遵守我的話語，你就會得福。」
魔鬼的攻擊，不是改變神的話語，而是改變我們看待神話語的方式——使我們懷疑神的愛，使我們把愛的忠告視為限制，最終讓我們把它丟棄。
第三點——從夏娃的失敗中學習
◆ 神的話語 vs. 世界的話語
神說了什麼？神說，吃了那果子就會死。
「你們絕對不會死。」當然是謊言。說謊是魔鬼的母語。
夏娃的錯誤在這裡清楚地顯現出來：她信任了蛇的話，勝過了神的話。
我想，今天許多基督徒也很可能以同樣的方式被欺騙。魔鬼不斷地試圖讓我們相信世界的話，而不是神的話。當人類信任了魔鬼的聲音而不是神的聲音，人類就墮落了。
罪進入了世界，死亡和疾病進入了世界，人類失去了與神的連結。這就是人類罪性的起源。
◆ 雪恥之戰
但撒但與那女人之間的這場較量，並沒有就此結束。有一場復仇之戰——耶穌替我們再打了一次。
在四十天禁食之後，耶穌受到了魔鬼的試探。魔鬼的提議極具吸引力，看似合情合理。那麼耶穌是怎麼回應的？

「神說……」「聖經記著說……」
對自己失去信心時 → 「你在我眼中是寶貴尊榮的。」對未來感到焦慮時 → 「我與你同在。」
◆ 神沒有放棄
人類曾經不相信神的話語，把它丟棄了。但神給了人類再一次的機會。
「道成了肉身，住在我們中間。」
耶穌不只是勝過了魔鬼的試探，祂更是一次性地抹去了從創世記開始的罪的所有後果。
在創世記第三章，人類墮落了。但神沒有放棄人類。事實上，就在墮落發生後不久，神已經開始說出祂的救贖計劃：

"You will not certainly die." Of course that was a lie. Lying is the devil's native language.
Eve's mistake is laid bare right here: she trusted the serpent's word over God's word.
I wonder whether many Christians today are being deceived in the same way. The devil is constantly working to make us trust the world's words over God's words. And when people trusted the devil's voice over God's voice, humanity fell.
Sin entered the world. Death and disease entered the world. Humanity lost its connection to God. This is the origin of human sin.
◆ The Rematch
But this story between the serpent and the woman is not finished. There is a rematch — and Jesus stepped in to fight it.
After forty days of fasting, Jesus was tempted by the devil. The devil's proposals were deeply appealing and seemed entirely reasonable. So how did Jesus respond?
Where Eve had abandoned God's word, Jesus met every temptation with God's word.
"It is written…"
This is the right way. Many people try to fight temptation with their own experience, their own thinking, their own feelings. But I want to encourage you to declare God's word instead.
"God says this." "It is written in Scripture."
When you lose confidence in yourself → "You are precious and honored in my sight."When you are anxious about the future → "I am with you."
◆ God Did Not Give Up
Humanity once refused to believe God's word. Humanity threw it away. But God gave humanity another chance.
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."
Jesus did not only overcome the devil's temptation. He cancelled out all the consequences of sin that began back in Genesis.
In Genesis chapter 3, humanity fell. But God did not abandon humanity. In fact, almost immediately after the fall, God began to speak of His plan of rescue:
"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."— Genesis 3:15
"Her offspring" — the singular form is used here. One person is being indicated. Satan would wound him — but he would crush Satan's head completely. A total victory.
That "offspring of the woman" is Jesus Christ.

Humanity failed. But God prepared a plan of salvation. For anyone who believes in Him.
We choose to live trusting in God's word. We will not throw it away — because we know that God's word leads us toward life.

引言——粒線體DNA
我曾看過NHK播出的一部紀錄片，讓我難以忘懷。在我們的基因中，有一種叫做「粒線體DNA」的特殊DNA。它不會從父親身上傳遞，只會從母親傳給子女，代代相承。
當科學家沿著這條粒線體DNA一路追溯下去，發現了一件令人驚嘆的事。地球上所有人類的母系血脈，最終都追溯到同一位在遠古非洲生活的女性。
科學家將這位女性稱為「粒線體夏娃」——這個名字正是來自聖經中的夏娃（Eve）。科學的發展非但沒有讓聖經顯得過時，反而似乎越來越印證了聖經的可信度。
同樣地，這個世界上每一個人所面對的問題——無論是疾病、爭執、夫妻吵架、說謊、互相傷害、地震、戰爭、死亡——當我們追溯這一切的根源，都指向同一個事件。
那就是創世記第三章。
看創世記第一、二章，世界是完美的。神創造了世界，創造了人類，創造了亞當和夏娃。那是一個美好的世界，一個沒有罪的世界。如果你只想看那個完美的世界，我建議只讀第一、二章。但到了第三章，一切都變了。罪進入了世界，所有的事物都被扭曲了。你今天所承受的問題，根源也在這裡。

◆ 他了解你的弱點

他就像一個關心你的朋友一樣靠近。「等等——所有的樹？這不是太苛刻了嗎？真的有這種事？」
魔鬼的陷阱，從讓你懷疑神的愛開始。
第二點——替換策略
◆ 「引導到生命的忠告」→「捆綁我的規則」
夏娃回答說：「不是所有的都不能吃，我們可以吃。只是園子中央那棵樹上的果子，不可以吃，也不可以摸，否則就會死。」
魔鬼說：「你們絕對不會死。其實神知道，你們吃了，眼睛就會開啟，你們就會像神一樣，知道善惡。」
關於罪，有兩件事值得注意：罪不會讓你立刻死亡，但最終導向死亡。而且罪看起來像是能使你得到滿足、能填補你的需求。
在這裡，我想請大家注意魔鬼正在做什麼。他沒有改變神的話語——那是無法改變的。但他試圖改變的，是夏娃看待神話語的方式。他把引導走向生命的忠告，換成了讓她覺得是在捆綁她的規則。
「那個規定在捆綁你」——他把為了保護、帶來生命的規定，替換成了對自由的限制。
這個魔鬼的策略，直到今天仍然相當奏效。
我們很容易把神的恩典之言、愛的勸勉，轉化成規則、規定和限制。
「我是基督徒，所以我必須禱告。我必須讀聖經。我必須去禮拜。」——等等，這些不是限制，這些是保護我們的事！「我必須奉獻。」——奉獻是神邀請我們進入祝福的方式。

魔鬼就對你說：「真的嗎？太可憐了吧。大家都這樣做。沒關係的。神根本不了解你。祂只是在壓制你，限制你的生活。」
◆ 限制，還是保護？
讓我們在這裡思考一個問題：神的話語真的是限制嗎？
想象一條魚說：「我受夠了在水裡被限制！我要自由！」然後它跳出水面，跳上了岸。結果呢？它死了。水不是在限制這條魚，水是在讓這條魚活著，保護牠。
你的孩子喜歡坐兒童安全座椅嗎？喜歡繫安全帶嗎？我們家為這個沒少費力。孩子哭鬧，大叫，「抱抱！」父母把孩子放在安全座椅上，是在限制孩子嗎？不是，是在保護孩子。只不過孩子還太小，不能理解這一點。
同樣地，我們是否有時候把神給我們的保護誤認為是限制？神是在嘗試保護你。
社會上有一種誤解，認為沒有規則才是自由。但如果所有規則都消失、警察和政府都停止運作，會發生什麼？沒有任何東西可以保護你。沒有規則，就是沒有保護。
丟棄神的話語，就是丟棄保護。
聖經中反覆傳遞的信息是：「遵守我的話語，你就會得福。」
魔鬼的攻擊，不是改變神的話語，而是改變我們看待神話語的方式——使我們懷疑神的愛，使我們把愛的忠告視為限制，最終讓我們把它丟棄。
第三點——從夏娃的失敗中學習
◆ 神的話語 vs. 世界的話語
神說了什麼？神說，吃了那果子就會死。
「你們絕對不會死。」當然是謊言。說謊是魔鬼的母語。
夏娃的錯誤在這裡清楚地顯現出來：她信任了蛇的話，勝過了神的話。
我想，今天許多基督徒也很可能以同樣的方式被欺騙。魔鬼不斷地試圖讓我們相信世界的話，而不是神的話。當人類信任了魔鬼的聲音而不是神的聲音，人類就墮落了。
罪進入了世界，死亡和疾病進入了世界，人類失去了與神的連結。這就是人類罪性的起源。
◆ 雪恥之戰
但撒但與那女人之間的這場較量，並沒有就此結束。有一場復仇之戰——耶穌替我們再打了一次。
在四十天禁食之後，耶穌受到了魔鬼的試探。魔鬼的提議極具吸引力，看似合情合理。那麼耶穌是怎麼回應的？
夏娃丟棄了神的話語，但耶穌卻以神的話語來對抗每一個試探。
「經上記著說……」

對自己失去信心時 → 「你在我眼中是寶貴尊榮的。」對未來感到焦慮時 → 「我與你同在。」
◆ 神沒有放棄
人類曾經不相信神的話語，把它丟棄了。但神給了人類再一次的機會。
「道成了肉身，住在我們中間。」
耶穌不只是勝過了魔鬼的試探，祂更是一次性地抹去了從創世記開始的罪的所有後果。
在創世記第三章，人類墮落了。但神沒有放棄人類。事實上，就在墮落發生後不久，神已經開始說出祂的救贖計劃：
我又要叫你和女人彼此為仇；你的後裔和女人的後裔也彼此為仇。女人的後裔要傷你的頭；你要傷他的腳跟。——創世記 3:15

Sumagot ang diyablo: "Hindi kayo tiyak na mamamatay. Sa katunayan, alam ng Diyos na kapag kumain kayo mula rito, mabubuksan ang inyong mga mata, at magiging katulad kayo ng Diyos, na nakaaalam ng mabuti at masama."

◆ Hadlang o Proteksyon?

Isipin ang isang isdang nagsasabi: "Pagod na ako na nakulong sa tubig. Gusto kong maging malaya." Lumundag ito sa lupa. Ano ang nangyayari? Namamatay ito. Ang tubig ay hindi nagpoprotekta sa isda — ang tubig ay nagpapanatiling buhay sa isda. Ang tubig ang proteksyon nito.
Gustung-gusto ba ng iyong anak ang car seat? Gustung-gusto ba niya ang seatbelt? Sa aming tahanan, ito ay isang pakikibaka. Iyak, sigaw, "Yakapin mo ako!" Pumasok ang kasalanan sa mundo. Pumasok ang kamatayan at sakit sa mundo. Nawala ng sangkatauhan ang koneksyon nito sa Diyos. Ito ang pinagmulan ng kasalanan ng tao.
◆ Ang Rematch
Ngunit ang kwentong ito sa pagitan ng ahas at ng babae ay hindi pa tapos. Mayroon pang isang laban — at si Jesus ang pumasok upang labanan ito para sa atin.
Pagkatapos ng apatnapung araw ng pag-aayuno, si Jesus ay natukso ng diyablo. Ang mga mungkahi ng diyablo ay lubhang kaakit-akit at tila makatuwiran. Kaya paano sumagot si Jesus?
Kung saan inabandona ni Eva ang salita ng Diyos, si Jesus ay sumagaot sa bawat tukso gamit ang salita ng Diyos.
"Nasusulat…"
Ito ang tamang paraan. Maraming tao ang sumusubukang labanan ang tukso gamit ang kanilang sariling karanasan, sariling pag-iisip, sariling pakiramdam. Ngunit nais kong hikayatin kayo na ipahayag ang salita ng Diyos.
"Sinasabi ng Diyos…" "Nakasulat sa Kasulatan…"
Kapag nawawalan ka ng tiwala sa iyong sarili → "Ikaw ay mahalaga at kagalang-galang sa aking paningin."Kapag nag-aalala ka tungkol sa hinaharap → "Kasama mo Ako."
◆ Hindi Sumuko ang Diyos
Minsan, tumanggi ang sangkatauhan na maniwala sa salita ng Diyos. Itinapon nila ito. Ngunit binigyan ng Diyos ang sangkatauhan ng isa pang pagkakataon.
"At ang Salita ay naging tao at nanirahan sa ating piling."
Hindi lamang nalampasan ni Jesus ang tukso ng diyablo. Binuwag Niya ang lahat ng kahihinatnan ng kasalanan na nagsimula sa Genesis.
Sa Genesis kabanata 3, nahulog ang sangkatauhan. Ngunit hindi tinayuan ng Diyos ang sangkatauhan. Sa katunayan, halos kaagad pagkatapos ng pagkahulog, nagsimula nang magsalita ang Diyos ng Kanyang plano ng pagliligtas:
"At maglalagay Ako ng pagaaway sa pagitan mo at ng babae, at sa pagitan ng iyong lahi at ng kanyang lahi; dudurugin niya ang iyong ulo, at ikaw ay mananakit ng kanyang sakong."— Genesis 3:15
"Ang kanyang lahi" — ang anyong panagtangi ay ginagamit dito. Isang partikular na tao ang tinutukoy. Sisirain ni Satanas siya — ngunit ganap niyang dudurugin ang ulo ni Satanas. Isang ganap na tagumpay.
Ang "lahi ng babae" na iyon ay si Jesu-Cristo.

Nabigo ang sangkatauhan. Ngunit naghanda ang Diyos ng plano ng kaligtasan — para sa sinumang naniniwala sa Kanya.
Pipiliin nating mamuhay sa tiwala sa salita ng Diyos. Hindi natin ito itatakwil — dahil alam natin na ang salita ng Diyos ay nag-aakay sa atin patungo sa buhay.
