"Loving and Passing On the Faith"
2 John 4–6
It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. — 2 John 4
And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. — 2 John 5
And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. — 2 John 6
Big Idea — Loving and Passing On the Faith
Introduction
The other day, my second son had his school sports day — and he told me I didn't need to come. When I asked why, he said: "You can come and watch the race, but not the dance. That's just adults making us do what they decided. I'm not dancing because I want to — it feels like I'm being made to do something that isn't really me."
Fair enough, I thought, quite impressed — until my wife said from beside me: "He's exactly like you."
That said, he dances perfectly happily at Tree House, which is rather adorable.
We inherit many things from our parents — the good and the not-so-good alike. And it isn't only parent and child. Each of us, in our own place, is having some kind of influence on those around us.
I find myself thinking again: what do I want to be remembered for? If something of me were to remain in people's hearts, what would I want to leave behind?
Point 1 — Passing On the Faith
◆ On Verse 4
John says, "It has given me great joy." Not just that you yourself were saved — but that your children are walking in the truth. You can almost feel how overwhelming that joy must be.
On the other hand — what is the thing you fear most? For me, the thing I fear most is my children not being saved. The thought of not finding them there with me in eternity is almost too painful to bear.
Even in pastors' families, many children drift away. You pour your life into seeing people saved — giving up weekends, not being there to play with your kids as much as you'd like — and then you look back one day and find that your children have walked away from the faith. That is a grief beyond words. Please pray for pastors' families.
The thing I desire most is the salvation of my children. I imagine many of you feel the same.
There are families who can honestly say: "We did everything we could — and they still drifted away." Passing on the faith in Japan is genuinely difficult. The seeds that are sown so carefully can be choked by thorns.
And yet, looking around, it seems far too many people are operating on the assumption that "it'll work out somehow."
Think about summer camp.
"God will take care of it" does not mean we are free to abandon what we ourselves ought to do. We believe — and therefore we act.
There are certain things that are simply the minimum required of us as parents.
◆ Three Things That Are Needed
① Pray
Pray daily for their salvation.
And pray together with them — that is vital. Are you praying with your children? Not just before meals. In our home, we pray together as a family at the end of every day.
There is so much that is passed from parent to child through prayer.
Recently I was away on a two-night work trip to Shizuoka, and I was told that my six-year-old third son prayed for me while I was gone. I was also deeply moved by the prayer of a certain high school student — apparently their family prays together regularly. So much is transmitted through praying together.
② Speak
Praying and acting — both matter. But are you also putting into words what you believe? Saying it once is not enough. You yourself didn't come to believe in Jesus after a five-or-ten-minute explanation. It needs to be spoken again and again.
Even in Christian families, there is often more that children don't understand than we realize.
My own child has been coming to church since birth — and not long ago, they asked me this: "Baptism is like proof that you're a Christian, right? So if you haven't been baptized, does that mean you're not saved? I haven't been baptized — does that mean I can't go to heaven?" That prompted me to explain that salvation is by faith alone, and to talk about the meaning of the cross. I thought to myself: I need to make sure I'm actually communicating these things. Since then, I've been deliberately working into our prayer time little explanations of God's love, piece by piece.
Without hearing, there can be no believing.
"This is what I believe."
③ Live It
It is also vital that parents themselves live as Christians — as worshippers. Not just knowing the gospel, but living it.
Children take after their parents. Picture the life you hope your children will live — and then live that way yourself, first.
The witness of a life lived well into old age. The way you face hardship, illness, and aging.
There are also things that grown children come to understand only when they enter the working world.
Point 2 — Living in Love
◆ On Verses 5–6
You might think, "I already know this." But what matters is not knowing it — it is living it.
This is the defining mark of a Christian. It is what is needed for a Christian to be a Christian, for a church to be a church. Love. This is something we never want to lose sight of.
"This is a football."
Are there those among us who feel that their faith has been stagnating lately?
There is a famous story about an American football coach who, in order to turn around a team that had fallen into a slump, did something remarkable. Standing before a group of experienced professional players, he said: "Let's go back to basics." Then he held up a football and said: "Everyone — this is a football." The point was: let's remember what we're here for.
We too need to remind ourselves, from time to time.
What is a Christian? A person who lives in love.
Let us remember this regularly. To love God, and to love people.
When we speak of living in love, I think there are four dimensions to it.
① Being loved by the Lord
It begins here — living in the love that the Lord has for us.
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. — 1 John 4:10
Even on a hard day, try praying: "Thank you for loving me today." "I am loved today." It gives you strength.
② Loving the Lord — in response to His love
Those who come to know deeply that they are loved by the Lord will grow to love the Lord in return.
Jesus said: "Whoever has been forgiven little loves little." Someone who doesn't recognize their own sin will find it difficult to love Jesus.
But the person who knows their own sinfulness — their weakness, their pride — and knows that Jesus, knowing all of it, still forgave them and loved them: that person will love Jesus deeply.
Your love for God will show in the way you live. Are you treating Him as someone precious? Do you have an intimate relationship with Him?
Loved by the Lord, loving the Lord — this vertical relationship. But it doesn't end there. This love overflows from us and spreads outward.
③ Loving people in the Lord
Those who know they are loved by God find that the love they have received begins to overflow.
And intention matters too — set your default to "love."
Love is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes.
That difficult person in your life? God is using them to train you.
If your spouse is difficult — think of them as your personal trainer.
Love is like a muscle.
And love is also like a candle. When you light another candle from yours, your own flame doesn't get smaller. The room simply becomes brighter.
Let us live a life of loving people. And if we do — at the end of it all —
④ Being loved by people in the Lord
Those who love are loved. There is what is called the law of reciprocity — human emotions tend to return like a mirror.
Let us walk a life of loving and being loved.
I believe church life is meant to be a place where we experience exactly this. People who have received love are transformed into people who give love. "That person remembered my name — I'm going to remember theirs." "They were praying for me — I'm going to pray for someone too." "That person encouraged me — I want to become someone who encourages others."
In that sense, the passing on of faith happens within the church as well. Just as culture forms within families, culture forms within churches.
What kind of church do you hope this will become in the years ahead?
A church overflowing with love is made possible by each and every person overflowing with love.
A good church is made possible by each and every good Christian.
So let us live in love.

"Pagmamahal at Pagpapasa ng Pananampalataya"
2 Juan 4–6

"Amar e Transmitir a Fé"
Ideia Central — Amar e Transmitir a Fé
◆ Explicação do Versículo 4
João diz: "Alegrei-me muito."
Transmitir a fé no Japão é genuinamente difícil.
② Falar
Orar e agir — ambos importam.
Ponto 2 — Vivendo no Amor
Amar a Deus e amar as pessoas.
Jesus disse: "Aquele a quem pouco é perdoado, pouco ama."
③ Amando as pessoas no Senhor
"Aquela pessoa me encorajou — quero me tornar alguém que encoraja os outros."
Portanto, vivamos no amor.
