On an Unshakable Foundation
1 Peter 2:4–8
Intro
What percentage of the earth is rock? Over 80% by volume.
We are studying the letter of Peter. Stone → lithos (λίθος) — it carries no implication of size.
In today’s passage, Peter uses the metaphor of stone to convey something important.
Scripture Reading
Did you notice that the metaphor of stone points to two things?
1. Christians
● The church (ekklesia) is people
What is the church? It is not a building.
Ekklesia: “those who are called.” The church is people — each one of us makes up the church.
A loving church is made of loving individuals; a mature church is made of mature individuals.
The same goes for a healthy church, a vibrant church.
Like stones fitted together and stacked up, the church is built.
● Stones of different shapes
World Heritage: dry stone walls (UK)
Used as enclosures for sheep and other livestock, and as land boundaries.
Walls made simply by stacking stones from fields and pastures — different shapes and sizes. That is apparently what makes them good. They have stood there for hundreds of years.
→ That is the picture of the church.
The church is that kind of place: everyone is different, fitted together, helping one another, loving one another.
God’s passion for the church — as a model of human community (society), as a model for the restoration of the world.
● “A holy priesthood”
Something treasured in the Reformation: the priesthood of all believers.
Not only pastors — everyone has been given a role in this world. The church, the kingdom of God, is built by everyone together, and gifts are given for that purpose.
● Your SHAPE
I said each of us has a different shape — we all have different gifts.
Those who say they have no gift misunderstand the meaning of the word “gift.” It does not mean talent.
Gifts include many things:
S — Spiritual Gifts: special abilities the Holy Spirit gives to each believer
H — Heart: the burning passion God has placed in your heart
A — Abilities: the natural talents and skills God has given you
P — Personality: the unique personality God has given you
E — Experiences: the life experiences God has given you
● “Living stones”
→ We have free will. We contribute willingly.
● It needs you — Mother Teresa
“We feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But without that drop, the ocean would be less by that much.”
2. The Cornerstone: Jesus Christ
● What is a cornerstone?
The foundation stone at the corner. It is laid first, and the building is built upon it.
It determines the direction and angles of the building — a decisively important stone.
● The cornerstone of our faith
The cornerstone (center, foundation) of our faith is Jesus — the cross and His salvation. This saves me, changes me, and guides me.
The cornerstone of my family, my work, my church, my life, my every day — that is Jesus. May You be at the center.
Otherwise we waver and get shaken.
● Not relying on myself
In salvation too, if Jesus is not the foundation, we waver.
For example, legalism — we try to rely on our own willpower.
The danger of “faith plus something”: “Faith alone doesn’t save”?
Zeal, works, effort → what lies there is disappointment and discouragement.
Peter’s experience: he was disappointed in himself.
● Never disappointed
1 Peter 2:6 For it is written in Scripture: “See, I lay in Zion a chosen stone, a precious cornerstone; whoever trusts in Him will never be disappointed.”
Let us put our hope in Him.
● Look and live
Ephesians 2:8 Because of this grace, you have been saved through faith. It is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:9 It is not by works, so that no one can boast.
The Old Testament contains many events pointing to the coming Savior and His cross.
Numbers 21 has an interesting story: because of sin, venomous snakes bit the people.
When Moses prayed, God said something interesting:
Make an image of a snake and put it on a long pole. “Everyone who is bitten, if they look at it, will live.”
“If they look at it, they will live.” What does the snake point to? Sin. Because of it we suffer and come to death — as it is written, the wages of sin is death. Jesus became sin itself (“God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us”) and was hung on a tree. If we look to Him, we live.
Jesus Himself referred to this event:
John 3:14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up.
Look to Him and live.
● An unshakable foundation
My own efforts fade away, but the cross does not.
I am disappointed in myself, but I have never been disappointed in Jesus.
He is our cornerstone. He sets the direction of our lives. He is our unshakable foundation.
Our lives are built on His grace.
The church too — let us build up the church together on His grace. I believe it will remain in God’s heart.

石头 → lithos(λίθος),并没有大小的含义。
Ekklesia:
H — Heart(心志·热情): 神放在你心中火热的感动
A — Abilities(能力): 神赐给你的天赋才能·技能
P — Personality(性格): 神赐给你的独特个性
E — Experiences(经历): 神赐给你的人生经历

World Heritage: dry stone wall (United Kingdom)
→ May malayang kalooban tayo. Kusang-loob tayong nag-aambag.
● Tumingin at mabuhay
