Candle Service 2025: The Light That Shines in Darkness

Luke 1:78-79

Introduction

In a doctor's office, a woman says, "I love black tea and drink it every evening with sugar and milk, but every time I drink it, my eye hurts. What should I do?" The doctor replies, "Take the spoon out of the cup before you drink."

While we all want to avoid the hospital, it is the season for colds. I heard that schools and kindergartens in the area have had class closures. Please take care of yourselves.

We don't want to catch a cold, but did you know that kindness is also contagious? Have you ever felt yourself becoming kinder after seeing someone else's act of kindness? Seeing a young person give up their seat, an older sister holding her little brother's hand, or an elderly couple walking hand-in-hand makes our hearts warm.

James Fowler and Nicholas Christakis discovered that kindness has a "tripling effect." When you are kind to one person, they become kind to three more, and each of those three inspires three others. The opposite is also true—negativity spreads too. We are all influenced by something, be it light or shadow. Which would you prefer to be influenced by?

Christmas is defined by the contrast between light and darkness. In the darkest season of the year, we light candles to represent Christ, who came into our darkness.

I. Light in the Darkness

The Bible describes the birth of Christ like this: "Because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace." (Luke 1:78-79)

"Living in darkness" is an interesting expression. It suggests that darkness has become a home where people have given up, thinking, "This is just how life is." The world before Christ—the Roman era—was a place where the strong trampled the weak and slavery was the norm. People had given up hope.

But then, the light shone. Angels announced, "A Savior has been born for you." Jesus showed a completely new way of living: Love. He visited the outcast, gave hope to the hopeless, and finally died on the cross as a substitute for our sins. The world had never seen such love.

II. The Light That Changes the World

Kindness is contagious, and the most influential love in history is that of Jesus Christ. Christianity spread in the Roman Empire because the lifestyle was so new. People saw slaves and nobles eating together as family, caring for abandoned children, and remaining hopeful even under persecution. Eventually, the world changed. Today, slavery is gone and human rights are valued. Even in Japan, the influence of Christ is everywhere: Sunday holidays, hospital symbols, and the concept of equality.

The Candle Service symbolizes this: One small flame from Christ passing to us, then to the next person, across generations.

III. Japan's History of Rejection and Helen Keller

Sadly, Japan has a history of rejecting this light. For 260 years, Christianity was brutally suppressed. The "Danka system" was created to force people to prove they weren't Christians. Perhaps as a result, despite being wealthy, Japan has low happiness levels and many people feel hopeless about their value. But there is a light that shines on you.

As a pastor, I have seen this light change lives: restoring broken marriages and changing the hearts of even the toughest individuals. Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing at age two, lived in a dark, silent world. But through the love of her Christian teacher, Anne Sullivan, she discovered hope. She said, "I found a radiant light in the Bible." She spent her life passing that light to others.

Christmas is a time to gaze upon Christ's love. Looking at that love makes us kinder and allows us to pass that light to those around us.

我們都不希望被感冒傳染，但各位知道嗎？「溫柔」也是會傳染的。大家是否有過看到別人的善行，自己也變得溫柔的經驗呢？ 看到讓座的年輕人、看到握住弟弟手的大姐姐、或是看到手牽手散步的老夫婦，我們的心會變得溫暖，也會想對人溫柔。

愛與溫柔具有傳染力。詹姆斯·福勒博士（James Fowler）和尼古拉斯·克里斯塔基斯博士（Nicholas Christakis）研究發現，溫柔的傳染力是「3倍」。也就是說，如果你對一個人親切，那個人會再對另外3人親切，而這3人又會分別帶動另外3人。 反之亦然，負面的情緒也會傳染。我們深受環境的光與影影響。那麼，你希望受到哪種影響呢？

聖誕節的特徵之一就是「光與暗的對比」。在一年中夜晚最長的季節，我們點燃燈火。這象徵著來到黑暗世界的基督。

I. 黑暗中的光

聖誕描述基督的降生時說： 「因我們神憐憫的心腸，叫清晨的日光從高天臨到我們，要照亮坐在黑暗中死蔭裡的人，把我們的腳引到平安的路上。」（路加福音 1:78-79）

「住在黑暗中」是一個很有趣的表達。那裡變成了居所，因為待久了，便對人生和世界感到死心，認為「反正人生就是這樣」。 基督出生前的羅馬時代，是個強者欺凌弱者、支配者掠奪受支配者的世界，暴力與奴隸制度被視為理所當然。人們對此感到絕望，認為無可奈何。

II. 改變世界的光

燭光禮拜象徵著這一切：從小小的火苗開始，從基督傳給我們，再一代傳一代，照亮全世界。

III. 曾拒絕光的日本與海倫·凱勒

遺憾的是，日本在歷史上曾長期拒絕這光。德川幕府曾徹底鎮壓並處決基督徒，為了證明自己不是基督徒，產生了「檀家制度」。 結果日本雖然富裕，幸福感卻很低，許多人覺得「反正人生就是這樣」而感到絕望。但請記住，有一束光正在照亮你。

我也身為牧師，親眼見證這光如何改變人生：破碎的夫妻關係恢復、黑道大哥改過自新。 海倫·凱勒（Helen Keller）在兩歲時失去視聽覺，身處無聲黑暗的絕望中。但她遇到基督徒蘇利文老師，感受到了愛。海倫說：「我在聖母中發現了耀眼的光芒。」她走遍世界，將這光傳遞給無數人。

Sa opisina ng doktor, may isang babaeng nagsabi, "Mahilig po ako sa tsaa at iniinom ko ito gabi-gabi na may asukal at gatas, pero tuwing umiinom ako, sumasakit ang mata ko. Ano po ang dapat kong gawin?" Sagot ng doktor, "Tanggalin mo ang kutsara sa tasa bago ka uminom."

Gusto nating lahat na umiwas sa ospital, pero panahon na naman ng sipon. Balita ko ay marami nang klase ang nasususpindi dahil sa sakit. Mag-ingat po tayong lahat.

Ayaw nating mahawa ng sipon, pero alam niyo ba na nakakahawa rin ang kabutihan? Naranasan niyo na bang maging mas mabait pagkatapos makakita ng kabutihan ng iba? Ang makakita ng kabataang nagbibigay ng upuan o matandang mag-asawang magkahawak-kamay ay nagpapainit ng ating puso.

I. Liwanag sa Kadiliman

Tatanglawan nito ang mga nananahan sa kadiliman at sa lilim ng kamatayan, at papatnubayan ang ating mga hakbang tungo sa daan ng kapayapaan." (Lucas 1:78-79)

"Nananahan sa kadiliman" — ibig sabihin ay nasanay na ang mga tao sa dilim at nawalan na ng pag-asa, iniisip na "ganito lang talaga ang buhay." Bago dumating si Kristo, sa panahon ng mga Romano, ang malalakas ay nanunupil sa mahihina. Ang mundo ay puno ng karahasan at pang-aalipin.
