Title: Respond and Stand

Passage: Jonah 3:1-10

Big Idea: Let us respond to the word of the Lord and stand up

Introduction

A pastor said, "If there is anyone here who thinks they are the worst person, would you please stand up?" There was a long silence, and then, one lady tentatively stood up. "Why do you think you are the worst?" "Well, actually, I don't really think so," she replied. "Then why did you stand up?" "Because you were the only one standing, and I felt sorry for you." What a kind lady!

Today, I want to focus on standing up (rising up). The God of the Bible is a God who speaks to people. It is safe to say that the Bible is where the messages, the words, from that God are recorded.

God has spoken to people in various ways: sometimes by sending people, His servants; sometimes through the written word; and sometimes through His only Son, Jesus. However, have people always responded well to this? Unfortunately, no. People have ignored it, sometimes gotten angry, committed violence, and persecuted others. Especially in Japan, we have such a history. Jesus said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear," but when the word of God is spoken, while some respond, there are also reactions of not listening, not being able to listen, or not wanting to listen.

God speaks the word. And what is always being asked of us, even now, is our response. Today, we will learn from the example of Jonah and the people who responded to God's word and stood up. We want to be people who stand up.

1 Become a Person Who Responds

v1-5

I want to focus on the word "again." I believe God's grace is contained in this "again." "Again" means there was a first time, doesn't it? When God spoke before, Jonah did not respond initially. He said, "No!" and ran away from God. I understand his feelings.

Nineveh was a city notorious in the ancient world, filled with shocking wickedness and cruelty. What would happen if he went there? It's not the same as saying, "Let's invite your friends to a church event." That's not to say inviting is easy, but your friends probably won't kill you if you invite them, right? But in Nineveh, that was a real possibility.

The theme is reacting and responding to God's word, but if you say, "Oh, that's easy," you'd be greatly mistaken. It's not like saying, "Would you like some sweet candy?" "Yes!" Sometimes, it's like being told to go to the city of Nineveh, the kind of thing that makes you ask, "Are you serious?" The kind of thing that makes you want to say, "I know it's the right thing, but I don't want to do it." It's the kind of thing where you'd say, "Please help me, I absolutely cannot do this without your help." That's why we sometimes don't react. Even when we hear, we don't stand up.

Jonah ran away at first. If he were an employee, he would have been fired long ago. He would have been told, "Jonah, I won't rely on you anymore. I have a replacement for you." However, God is a God of grace. He is the God who gives chances to those who have failed.

The Bible is full of such examples. Moses also failed (he murdered someone). Abraham, and David, too. And Peter, who was Jesus' disciple, is also an example.

Peter was Jesus' chief disciple, yet he made a huge mistake. He denied knowing Jesus and ran away to save his own life. It was a shameful experience, a "disqualification" as a Christian. But Jesus gave him a chance again. To weak Peter, He said, "Feed my sheep." "I entrust the church, God's people, to you."

It is difficult to forgive a person who has failed, but there is something even more difficult: to trust them again. God does that.

The Bible is not a success story of perfect people. It is the story of people, like you and me, who have weaknesses, and the story of God's love, who continues to be involved with us, continues to support us, and in a sense, continues to believe in us without giving up.

Is there anyone here today who can say they have walked a perfect life without ever failing? We are all not like that, are we? If so, the Book of Jonah is your story.

To the failed Jonah, the word of the Lord came "again." "I have not given up on you." Verse 2: Stand up, react, respond.

And then, another response appears: the people of Nineveh. Jonah cried out in the city of Nineveh. What was the message they heard? "Forty more days, and Nineveh will be overthrown." You'd think there might be a nicer way to put it; you might expect people to get angry hearing that, but God told him to say it. The word of God spoken through Jonah resounded in the city of Nineveh.

It must have been an unwelcome message. It must have been a word they didn't want to hear. "The way you are is bad," "If you continue this lifestyle, you will regret it," "If you die as you are, you will go to hell." Many people do not want to hear this.

But when the word of God was spoken, the Holy Spirit worked powerfully there. It was a great city that took three days to walk across, yet, incredibly, upon the message of the first day, the people of Nineveh turned back. Verse 5: Repentance.

Revival is reported in various places around the world in different eras, but do you know what they have in common? Repentance. When people respond to God's word and decide to change their way of life, the Bible calls this repentance. Repentance happens during revival. Who repents? First, repentance happens among Christians. The Holy Spirit works, and people begin to respond to the Word and stand up. What they had failed to respond to before is revealed. Then, the Gospel spreads, and many non-Christians are saved. That is what is seen in revival.

I believe we can see the prototype of this in the Book of Jonah. First, Jonah responded to God's word and stood up. Believers in God respond to the spoken Word of God and stand up. God is seeking such people today as well. And through this, the city is saved.

We desire the salvation of people. We desire the salvation of our families. That is why we want to be the ones who first respond to the word of God.

2 Let Us Descend from the Throne

v.6-9

Repentance occurred throughout the entire city of Nineveh, but a symbolic event is described in verse 6: He, too, reacted to the word of God and stood up. And it was fast.

"He arose from his throne, took off his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes."

These are acts of humiliation (humility), but in ancient society, the king held absolute power. That king humbles himself. He descends from the throne.

All of us were sitting on our own thrones, weren't we? Someone once said, "My husband's throne is the toilet seat. That's where he seems most relaxed," but that's not what I mean. Before we knew God, we thought the center of this life was ourselves. We lived for ourselves. We recently talked about the difference between idol worship and true worship, didn't we? Idol worship is trying to move God. True worship is deciding to change ourselves. To put it differently, idol worship is trying to use God without descending from your throne. True worship is descending from your throne and letting God take His seat.

Living as a Christian might mean continually descending from this throne. Even after becoming a Christian, our ego is persistent and quickly tries to sit on the throne again. A life for ourselves. We try to use God for that purpose.

The desire of our church is the salvation of people, but that is not all, is it? We desire that people be saved and become disciples of the Lord. We desire that saved people descend from their own thrones, turn away from the life "for myself!", and become people who live for a greater purpose, for God. Because we believe that is the most meaningful life.

The king of Nineveh descended from his throne immediately upon hearing the word of God. Why can't we respond to the word of God? One reason might be procrastination. "I know. But I'll do it someday." "Yes, that would be better. I'll do it when the circumstances are right." It would be sad if we waste our lives doing that. And for those who don't believe in God: "I don't really believe in Shinto shrines either; it's strange that dead people become gods. It's ridiculous to worship dried sweet potatoes. And I don't believe in Buddhism either. But it's just that my family has been doing it for generations, you know? You understand, right? You know."

In the Book of Acts, a person named Paul preached the Gospel in Athens. The people said, "We will hear you again concerning this." Procrastination is the same as non-response. The king immediately descended from the throne. The people immediately changed direction. And they received God's grace.

3 Respond and Receive God's Grace

v.10

Nineveh was given a chance. God is compassionate.

Ezekiel 18:23: "Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?"

Even those who are not yet Christians are here today. God is waiting for you. And on the day you turn around, God will rejoice.

Also, I noted something interesting. In this passage, God asked nothing more than that the people of Nineveh decided to turn around. The people repented and fasted. And they were not punished. I would think, "God, isn't it too soon to cancel the punishment? It's still 40 days away. Why not wait until the time limit?"

What about you? If someone who did something to you said, "I'm sorry. I'll do better from now on"? I would probably say, "Really? Then prove it. Let me see if you've truly changed before I decide what to do." But God doesn't say, "Prove it."

Isn't the story of the prodigal son the same? The son wasted his inheritance, lived a riotous life, and came back broken. The father ran to that son, embraced him, and welcomed him back as his child again. Normally, it would be, "You disgraced the family. I'll see if you've truly turned over a new leaf. Prove it." Yet, this father was overjoyed that his "son has come back." That is the image of God.

I spoke about Peter at the beginning. To Peter, who abandoned Jesus, Jesus appeared again and gently asked, "Do you love me?" To Peter, who said, "Lord, you know that I love you," Jesus did not say, "Prove it." He entrusted him with the church. He entrusted him with the most important thing to Him. Jesus will do the same for you today.

Are you full of failures? So am I. Did you make a resolution, but it didn't work out? So did I. Did you disappoint God? So did I. But I want to encourage you. Again, the word of the Lord came to Jonah.

God speaks to us. Many times in life. Through the Bible, through Christians, through sermons in worship, in prayer. And what about us? We respond! We might fail again. It might not go well. In fact, we fail many times. But each time, we walk on, helped by this love. We walk on, supported by the grace given to those who do not deserve it.

God speaks to us again. He expects things of you again, and He entrusts things to you again. I pray that we may be people who walk, responding with all our might to this love of God.

Lead into Prayer

Jonah 3 begins: "Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time." In this "a second time," we see God's unchanging grace and mercy.

Like him, we too may have sometimes turned our backs on God's calling and been unresponsive. However, God speaks to us again.

Holy Spirit, if there is anything You are speaking to us today, or anything You have been showing us that we have been procrastinating on, please teach us.

We also pray for this: Who is sitting on our throne today? What is the center of our lives, our purpose for living? May it be You.

1 成為回應的人

v1-5

3 回應並領受神的恩典

v.10

神對我們說話。在人生的許多時刻。藉著聖經、藉著基督徒、藉著崇拜中的講道、在禱告中。而我們呢？我們回應！我們可能會再次失敗。可能不會順利。事實上，我們失敗了很多次。但每一次，我們都在這份愛的幫助下繼續前行。我們靠著賜予不配得之人的恩典支持著前行。

神會再次對我們說話。祂再次對你寄予期望，再次將事物託付給你。我渴望成為一個盡全力回應這份神愛的人。

Isang pastor ang nagsabi, "Kung mayroon dito na nag-iisip na siya ang pinakamasamang tao, maaari po ba kayong tumayo?" Nagkaroon ng mahabang katahimikan, at pagkatapos, isang ginang ang maingat na tumayo. "Bakit po ninyo iniisip na kayo ang pinakamasama?" "Hindi naman po talaga," sagot niya. Mayroon ba dito ngayon na makakapagsabi na naglakad sila ng isang perpektong buhay nang hindi kailanman nabigo? Hindi tayo ganoon lahat, hindi ba? Kung gayon, ang Aklat ni Jonas ay iyong kuwento.

Kay Jonas na nabigo, dumating muli ang salita ng Panginoon. Hindi kita sinukuan. Bersikulo 2: Tumindig, mag-react, tumugon.

At pagkatapos, lumitaw ang isa pang tugon: ang mga tao ng Nineve. Jonas sumigaw sa lungsod ng Nineve. Ano ang mensahe na kanilang narinig? "Apatnapung araw na lang, at ang Nineve ay ibabagsak." Masasabi mong, baka may mas magandang paraan para sabihin iyan; baka magalit ang mga tao sa pagsasabi niyan, ngunit sinabi ng Diyos sa kanya na sabihin iyon. Ang salita ng Diyos na sinabi sa pamamagitan ni Jonas ay umalingawngaw sa lungsod ng Nineve.

Ito ay malamang na hindi kaaya-ayang mensahe. Ito ay malamang na salita na ayaw nilang marinig. "Ang iyong kalagayan ay hindi maganda," "Kung ipagpapatuloy mo ang pamumuhay na ito, magsisisi ka," "Kung mamatay ka sa kalagayan mo ngayon, mapupunta ka sa impiyerno." Maraming tao ang ayaw makinig dito.

Ngunit nang sinabi ang salita ng Diyos, makapangyarihang kumilos ang Banal na Espiritu doon. Ito ay isang malaking lungsod na tumatagal ng tatlong araw upang lakarin, ngunit, nakakagulat, sa unang araw pa lamang ng mensahe, ang mga tao ng Nineve ay bumaling. Bersikulo 5: Pagsisisi.

Ang mga revival (pagbabalik-loob/pagbabagong-buhay) ay iniuulat sa iba't ibang lugar sa mundo sa iba't ibang panahon, ngunit alam mo ba kung ano ang kanilang pagkakatulad? Ito ay "pagsisisi." Kapag tumugon ang mga tao sa salita ng Diyos at nagpasiyang baguhin ang kanilang paraan ng pamumuhay, tinatawag ito ng Bibliya na pagsisisi. Nangyayari ang pagsisisi sa revival. Sino ang nagsisisi? Una, nangyayari ang pagsisisi sa mga Kristiyano. Gumagawa ang Banal na Espiritu, at nagsisimulang tumugon ang mga tao sa Salita at tumindig. Ang mga bagay na hindi nila tinugunan noon ay inihayag. Pagkatapos, kumakalat ang Ebanghelyo, at maraming hindi Kristiyano ang naliligtas. Iyan ang nakikita sa revival.

Naniniwala ako na makikita natin ang prototype nito sa Aklat ni Jonas. Una, tumugon si Jonas sa salita ng Diyos at tumindig. Ang mga naniniwala sa Diyos ay tumutugon sa sinasalitang Salita ng Diyos at tumitindig. Hinahanap ng Diyos ang mga taong tulad niyan maging ngayon. At sa pamamagitan nito, naliligtas ang lungsod.

Nais natin ang kaligtasan ng mga tao. Nais natin ang kaligtasan ng ating pamilya. Kaya naman, una, nais nating maging mga taong tumutugon sa salita ng Diyos.

2 Bumaba Tayo sa Trono

v.6-9

Nagkaroon ng pagsisisi sa buong lungsod ng Nineve, ngunit isang simbolikong pangyayari ang inilarawan sa bersikulo 6: Siya rin ay nag-react sa salita ng Diyos at tumindig. At napakabilis nito.

"Siya ay bumangon mula sa kanyang trono, naghubad ng kanyang balabal ng hari, nagsuot ng damit na sako, at umupo sa abo."

Ang mga ito ay mga gawa ng pagpapakumbaba, ngunit sa sinaunang lipunan, ang hari ay nagtataglay ng lubos na kapangyarihan. Ang haring iyon ay nagpapakumbaba sa kanyang sarili. Siya ay bumaba mula sa trono.

Lahat tayo ay nakaupo sa sarili nating mga trono, hindi ba? May isang nagsabi, "Ang trono ng aking asawa ay ang upuan ng kubeta. Tila doon siya pinakanakakarelaks," ngunit hindi iyon ang ibig kong sabihin. Bago natin nakilala ang Diyos, inisip natin na ang sentro ng buhay na ito ay tayo. Nabuhay tayo para sa ating sarili. Nag-usap tayo kamakailan tungkol sa pagkakaiba ng pagsamba sa idolo at tunay na pagsamba, hindi ba? Ang pagsamba sa idolo ay ang pagsubok na pakilusin ang Diyos. Ang tunay na pagsamba ay ang pagpasiyang baguhin ang ating sarili. Sa ibang salita, ang pagsamba sa idolo ay ang pagsubok na gamitin ang Diyos nang hindi ka bumababa sa iyong trono. Ang tunay na pagsamba ay ang pagbaba mo sa iyong trono at ang pagpapaupo sa Diyos.

Ang pamumuhay bilang isang Kristiyano ay maaaring nangangahulugan ng patuloy na pagbaba mula sa tronong ito. Kahit na pagkatapos maging Kristiyano, ang ating sarili ay matigas at mabilis na nagtatangkang umupo muli sa trono. Isang buhay para sa ating sarili. Sinusubukan nating gamitin ang Diyos para sa layuning iyon.

Ang nais ng ating iglesya ay ang kaligtasan ng mga tao, ngunit hindi lamang iyan, hindi ba? Nais nating maligtas ang mga tao at maging mga alagad ng Panginoon. Nais nating ang mga naligtas ay bumaba mula sa kanilang sariling trono, lumihis mula sa buhay na "para sa sarili ko!", at maging mga taong nabubuhay para sa isang mas dakilang layunin, para sa Diyos. Dahil naniniwala kami na iyon ang buhay na may pinakamalaking kahulugan.

Ang hari ng Nineve ay agad na bumaba mula sa kanyang trono nang marinig niya ang salita ng Diyos. Bakit hindi tayo makatugon sa salita ng Diyos? Isang dahilan ay maaaring pagpapaliban. "Alam ko. Ngunit gagawin ko iyan balang araw." "Oo, mas mabuti iyan. Gagawin ko kapag naayos na ang mga sitwasyon." Nakalulungkot kung sinasayang natin ang ating buhay sa paggawa niyan. At para sa mga hindi naniniwala sa Diyos: "Hindi naman ako talaga naniniwala sa mga dambana ng Shinto; kakaiba na ang mga patay ay nagiging diyos. Nakakabaliw ang pagsamba sa pinatuyong kamote. At hindi rin ako naniniwala sa Budismo. Ngunit ang aming pamilya ay ganoon na sa maraming henerasyon, alam mo, hindi ba? Naiintindihan mo, hindi ba?"

Sa Aklat ng Mga Gawa, isang taong nagngangalang Pablo ang nangaral ng Ebanghelyo sa Atenas. Sinabi ng mga tao, "Tungkol dito, makikinig kami sa iyo muli." Ang pagpapaliban ay katulad ng hindi pagtugon. Agad na bumaba ang hari mula sa trono. Agad na nagbago ng direksyon ang mga tao. At kanilang tinanggap ang biyaya ng Diyos.

3 Tumugon at Tanggapin ang Biyaya ng Diyos

Nabigyan ng pagkakataon ang Nineve. Ang Diyos ay maawain.

Ezekiel 18:23: "Nalulugod ba ako sa kamatayan ng masama? ang sabi ng Panginoong Diyos. Hindi ba't mas nalulugod ako kapag sila ay tumalikod sa kanilang mga lakad at nabuhay?"

Maging ang mga hindi pa Kristiyano ay narito ngayon. Inaantay ka ng Diyos. At sa araw na bumaling ka, magagalak ang Diyos.

Also, may napansin akong interesante. Sa bahaging ito, wala nang hiningi pa ang Diyos kundi ang pagpapasiya lamang ng mga tao ng Nineve na bumaling. Nagsisi ang mga tao at nag-ayuno. At hindi sila pinarusahan. Maiisip ko, "Diyos, hindi ba napakaaga naman upang kanselahin ang parusa? May 40 araw pa. Bakit hindi mo hintayin hanggang sa limitasyon ng oras?"

Kumusta naman sa iyo? Kung may nagkasala sa iyo at nagsabing, "Pasensya na. Gagawin ko na ang tama mula ngayon"? Malamang sasabihin ko, "Talaga? Kung gayon patunayan mo. Tingnan ko muna kung nagbago ka talaga bago ako magpasya kung ano ang gagawin." Ngunit hindi sinasabi ng Diyos, "Patunayan mo."

Hindi ba ganoon din ang kuwento ng alibughang anak? Ang anak na nag-aksaya ng kanyang mana, nagpakasasa sa kalibugan, at bumalik na sira-sira. Ang ama ay tumakbo sa anak na iyon, niyakap siya, at muling tinanggap bilang anak. Karaniwan, sasabihin, "Ikinahiya mo ang pamilya. Titingnan ko muna kung nagbago ka talaga. Patunayan mo." Hindi ba? Ngunit ang amang ito ay labis na nagalak dahil ang kanyang "anak ay bumalik." Iyan ang larawan ng Diyos.

Nabanggit ko si Pedro sa simula. Kay Pedro na nagtaksil kay Hesus, muling nagpakita si Hesus at marahan na nagtanong, "Mahal mo ba ako?" Kay Pedro na nagsabi, "Panginoon, alam ninyo na mahal ko kayo." Hesus hindi sinabi, "Patunayan mo." Ipinagkatiwala Niya sa kanya ang iglesya. Ipinagkatiwala Niya sa kanya ang pinakamahalagang bagay para sa Kanya. Gagawin din iyan ni Hesus sa iyo ngayon.

Puno ka ba ng mga pagkabigo? Ganoon din ako. Nagpasya ka ba, ngunit hindi ito gumana? Ganoon din ako. Binigo mo ba ang Diyos? Ganoon din ako. Ngunit gusto kitang bigyan ng lakas. Muli, ang salita ng Panginoon ay dumating kay Jonas.

Nagsasalita ang Diyos sa atin. Sa maraming beses sa buhay. Sa pamamagitan ng Bibliya, sa pamamagitan ng mga Kristiyano, sa pamamagitan ng sermon sa pagsamba, sa panalangin. At tayo? Tayo ay tumutugon! Maaari tayong mabigo muli. Maaaring hindi ito maging maayos. Sa katunayan, marami tayong beses na nabibigo. Ngunit sa bawat pagkakataon, nagpapatuloy tayo, tinutulungan ng pag-ibig na ito. Nagpapatuloy tayo, sinusuportahan ng biyaya na ibinibigay sa mga hindi karapat-dapat tumanggap nito.

Muling magsasalita sa atin ang Diyos. Muli Siyang umaasa sa iyo, at muli Siyang nagtitiwala sa iyo. Nawa'y maging mga taong nagpapatuloy tayo, na tumutugon nang buong-puso sa pag-ibig na ito ng Diyos.
